Race Like No One Is Watching…

..because there’s no one around to watch.

The past few weeks have been quite interesting to say the least. Training has now become a completely solo sufferfest, and there isn’t any certainty as to when races will be able to take place again.

To fill the void races have started to go “virtual”. Ironman is already running their fourth this weekend. I’ve signed up for 3 of the Ironman ones now, and another 1/2 marathon to benefit the National Parks. So far, having done 2 races, putting a solid effort into only one of them, the difference to actually racing is extreme.

It is quite odd ‘racing’ through my neighborhood, getting the odd looks from families with strollers and people walking dogs. Certainly in stark contrast from running with other competitors. I have been and cycling inside so far. It is much safer as pedestrians rarely expect bikes to be going by that quickly, there’s a reason they’re not allowed on the cycle course during races. Also, having to stop at intersections and wait for cars does slow you down a bit.

I really miss having other people out there with me as well. I’m the guy who talks with the other competitors as we’re riding or running closely. That comradery of shared experience that grows even stronger within shared suffering just isn’t there. You don’t have someone with you pulling you along, or pushing you to ensure they stay a place behind you, especially with those in your age group.

There also isn’t a finishing line to push for, just need to keep a really close eye on the watch when you get close, holding your arm out, or staring at the Garmin on the bike to ensure you’re not putting any extra time and distance in. Not nearly as exciting as seeing people lining the shoot and hearing the crowd and thumping music guide you in.

While I certainly appreciate the chance to ‘race’ and this is was a very welcome distraction from the standard training routine, I really miss being around all the other athletes. I miss the Event, the anticipation and exhilaration the finish line brings.

On a super bright note, I set a new PR at the 10k run and the 40k bike during the Ironman VR2. While I think I certainly could have gone harder with others out there, it does feel good to let it rip sometimes an just enjoy the feeling of moving quickly, taking the punishment, gritting your teeth and pushing yourself through.

Finally, looking on the light side of this whole mess. I am thankful for the opportunity to work on my mental fortitude. Nothing builds your strength of will and mental conditioning like training and racing completely alone!
